Raised vegetable bed plans that decide how often you water
The two numbers on a raised vegetable bed plan that decide your watering are depth and width. A taller, narrower bed drains faster and dries from the top sooner than the plan's photo suggests. Set those two before you count boards.
Lumber, corners, and screws hold the box together. Depth and width set how the box dries, so we tie each step below to the drying rate you'll live with once the bed is full.
Step 1. Set depth to the root zone
Most vegetable roots feed in the top layer of soil, so a bed deep enough to cover them plus a few inches to drain suits greens, beans, and tomatoes. Root crops want more depth below. A deeper bed drains more freely, because gravity pulls water down through more soil and out the open bottom, so the surface dries between waterings sooner. In our own garden the raised beds run 24 inches deep and the ground bed runs 8 inches.
Step 2. Cap the width at your reach
Width sets how far you lean to weed and harvest, and how fast the surface dries. Keep a bed you work from both sides under about twice your comfortable reach, and give a bed against a wall a single side. Our raised beds are 39 inches wide, which we reach from either side. A narrower bed exposes more edge to wind per square foot of soil, so it dries faster.
Size the width so you never step into the bed. Foot traffic packs the soil, which cuts drainage and leaves the surface wet while the root zone runs dry.
Step 3. Pick length from your lumber
Length barely touches watering. Cut it to the boards or kit panels you buy so you waste none. Our raised beds are 94 inches long. A long bed needs a cross-brace at the middle, because wet soil is heavy and pushes the long walls outward.
Step 4. Build or buy
Building from lumber costs less per bed when you own the tools and can haul the boards. A metal or cedar kit costs more and arrives cut, square, and ready to assemble. Whichever you pick, the depth and width from the steps above still set the drying rate.
Step 5. Match the soil mix to the depth
A tall bed filled with a fast-draining mix dries the quickest of all. Peat and coir hold water, while too much perlite or bark sheds it. Fill a deeper bed with a mix that keeps moisture in the root zone, and read our soil mix and drying rate guide before you order bulk material.
Step 6. Read each bed once it's built
Two identical beds side by side dry at different rates once they hold different plants. A per-bed soil probe reads the moisture in one bed and warns you when it runs dry, so you water the bed that needs it and skip the one that doesn't. The probe holds the alert until two readings in a row drop below the threshold you set, which keeps a single dry spike from tripping it. Siltwell sets that threshold at 25 percent by default. That alert is a Pro feature, and it tells you a bed is dry rather than running any irrigation.
What the plan can't promise
Depth and width set the drying rate. They don't lock it. In our own garden the 24-inch raised bed 3 swung from 32 percent to 62 percent moisture across late summer. Its 8-inch ground-bed neighbor swung across that same band. Depth alone didn't set the floor. Our raised bed 1 held a tighter 39 to 54 percent over the same weeks, because what grew in it and how much it was watered moved it less.
Draw your bed at the depth and width from the steps above, order the lumber or kit to that length, and put a probe in the first bed you fill so you learn its real drying rate before you build the next one.
