Why raised beds for vegetables dry out faster
Raised beds drain water out of every exposed side. They warm faster in the sun, so they dry sooner than the ground around them. Water them on what the soil reads. A schedule built for an in-ground row leaves them short.
Why raised beds dry faster
A row in open ground loses water mostly from the top. A raised bed loses it from the top and the walls. Soil sits against wood or metal that sun and wind reach on all sides. More exposed surface drains and evaporates more water.
The soil warms faster in a raised bed too. Warm soil speeds root growth early in the season. Later it speeds evaporation. Both effects pull moisture out of the root zone quicker than an in-ground bed of the same soil. So the two need separate watering reads.
What our beds did
In our own garden the raised beds hit their driest reads in September, when only 1.35 inches of rain fell. Raised bed 1 fell to 39% on the 7th. Raised bed 2 read 36% the day before. Across the season those two held tighter ranges, 39% to 54% and 36% to 57%.
Our deepest swing came from raised bed 3. It ran 32% to 62% between mid-July and early September. The 8-inch-deep ground bed swung across the same 32% to 62% span. That tells us depth and mix matter as much as the raised shape. Our raised beds run 24 inches deep, so they carry a larger water reservoir than a shallow one would.
Hold one number lightly. A capacitive probe reports percent relative to that probe and that soil. So 32% in one bed does not hold the same water as 32% in another. The reads track how a single bed dries over days, and that is what they are good for.
How deep and what soil
Depth buys you a buffer. A deeper bed holds more water for the same surface area. It rides out a hot spell better than a shallow one. Most vegetables root well in 12 inches or more of loose soil, and our 24-inch beds give roots room and slow the drying.
The mix decides how long that buffer lasts. Organic matter holds moisture between waterings. It keeps a free-draining bed from running dry by afternoon, so we blend compost through the soil rather than fill with a fast-draining topsoil alone. How to water them
Read each bed before you water. A raised bed can look dry on top while the root zone still holds water. It can read fine on top while the lower soil has drained. A probe left in the root zone gives you the read that matters.
A per-bed soil probe fires a dry warning when its two most recent readings both fall below that bed's threshold. The threshold defaults to 25%. The probe alerts you when a bed runs dry. It does not run your hose. You still open the valve or fill the can, and you decide how much to give.
Set a probe in your two thirstiest beds. Watch the reads for a week. Note the percent each bed sits at the morning after you water. That gives you a floor to water against instead of a calendar, and it is the read your in-ground rows will not share.

- There is no fixed frequency, because the rate a bed dries depends on the weather, the mix, and what is growing. Water when the top of the root zone reads dry rather than on a set day.
