Raised Beds for Vegetables: Great Yields, but They Dry Out Faster Than You Think

Search "raised beds for vegetables" and you'll find a hundred guides on kits, dimensions, and how to fill them — then they all end on the same limp note: "water regularly." That's the part that quietly sinks a first raised-bed season. The very drainage that makes these beds so productive also means they dry out faster than the ground around them, and they need their own watering read, not the schedule you used for your in-ground rows.

Why raised beds dry out faster

A raised bed is engineered to drain. Don't water the day before it rains

Per-bed moisture answers "is this bed dry." There's a second, garden-wide question: is real rain coming, or did it already fall? Watering a raised bed the evening before a downpour wastes water and can drown roots the drainage was supposed to protect.

A deep bed (30–45 cm) filled with a free-draining, compost-rich mix holds more water and dries more gently than a shallow box over hard ground — if you're still filling yours, start with compost for raised beds.
