Metal Raised Garden Bed Kits: Which One to Buy — and the Watering Reality Nobody Mentions
Search for raised garden bed kits and you get pages that rank them by size, price, and whether the steel is galvanized or Corten. Useful at checkout, useless for the thing that actually governs your summer: how fast the bed dries out, and therefore how often you'll be out there with a hose. Material changes that more than almost any other spec — and it's the one thing the listings never mention.
Metal, wood, or fabric — judge them on drying speed
The three common kit materials behave very differently once the sun is on them, and it comes down to how each one handles heat and water at the edges of the bed.
- Metal (galvanized / Corten steel): durable, rot-proof, and tidy — but the walls heat up in direct sun and the soil within a few inches of the metal dries noticeably faster than the core. The "nicer" kit can quietly mean watering more often.
- Wood: insulates best and holds moisture the longest, so it's the most forgiving on watering. The trade-off is that untreated boards eventually rot and need replacing.
- Fabric: breathable pots that drain and air-prune hard, which is great for root health and terrible for staying moist — they dry fastest of the three and punish a missed watering.
None of these is "best" in the abstract. A metal bed in a mild, cloudy climate is a joy; the same bed in a baking, exposed yard can want water twice a day in July. The point is that the material you pick sets your watering workload, and that's the variable the retailer pages leave out entirely.
Why metal beds dry faster — and how to blunt it
Metal conducts heat, so the walls warm the soil against them and speed evaporation at the perimeter while the center stays cooler and damper. The result is an uneven bed: the outer ring goes dry first, the middle lags behind. In a shallow kit — say 8 inches — there's not much soil volume to buffer that, so the whole bed swings dry quickly. Depth is your friend here.
You can take most of the sting out of a metal bed without giving up the look. Build it at least 12–18 inches deep so there's soil volume to hold water. Mulch the surface to slow evaporation. Which bed did the metal actually cook dry?
Here's the problem with "metal dries faster": you can't see it. The surface looks the same across every bed, and the metal one might be bone-dry three inches down while your wood bed next to it is still fine. Guessing leads to two mistakes — watering everything on a schedule (drowning the beds that didn't need it) or watering nothing until something wilts.
