A calendar can't feel your soil. Here's why fixed schedules fail, and how weather- and sensor-aware watering fixes it.
The problem
A schedule doesn't know what your garden knows.
"Water every 3 days" doesn't know it poured last night. It doesn't know a July heat wave dried your containers by noon, because a pot holds too little soil to last through the heat. As one gardener put it, an app can't tell whether a plant is dry; it can't know. So a generic schedule over-waters one bed and under-waters another, in the same garden, on the same day. Waterlogged soil pushes out the air that roots need, and the starved roots rot. In dry soil the roots can't replace what the leaves lose, so the leaf tips, farthest from the roots, go crisp first.

Most garden apps run per-plant schedules, and some nudge them for your region. That still misses what happened in your beds this week. A regional adjustment can't see your yard's shade, wind, and low spots, which change how fast each bed dries. A forecast from last week can't tell you how much rain fell last night.

Watering should start from two real signals. Rainfall tells you how much water reached the garden. Soil moisture tells you whether this bed still holds enough for its roots. With both, "it's Tuesday" drops out of the decision. The answer reads "water bed 3, skip bed 1."
