How to water a galvanized water trough planter
A galvanized water trough dries out faster than a raised bed, and the metal is the reason. Steel walls soak up sun and pass that heat into the soil pressed against them, so the edges bake while the middle holds on. Water a trough by what its soil is doing. The schedule that keeps your beds happy will overshoot it or starve it.
Why the metal dries the soil out
Zinc-coated steel conducts heat well. On a sunny afternoon the wall of a trough climbs well above air temperature, and it warms the soil touching it. Warm soil gives up water to the air faster, so the outer inch or two of a trough dries first.
A trough also holds a tall, narrow column of soil. Water pulls down through that column under gravity and drains out the bottom. A wide bed spreads the same water across more soil and holds it longer.
The size of the gap shows up in a reading. In our own garden a raised bed held between 32% and 62% moisture through midsummer. A metal trough of the same soil, sitting in full sun, trends toward the dry end of that range and gets there sooner. Depth helps a trough claw some of that back, since roots can drop below the heated top layer.
Drainage holes are not optional
A stock trough is built to hold water. Out of the box it has no drainage, so rain and irrigation pool in the bottom and rot roots. Drill the holes before you fill it.
- Base holes. Drill several half-inch holes across the bottom so water leaves under gravity.
- Side holes. Add a low ring of holes in the side walls to clear any water the base cannot.
- Feet. Set the trough on gravel or blocks so the holes stay open and air moves under it.
A deep trough drains fast once it has holes. That same depth is why the top dries fast, so drainage and drying pull in the same direction. You solve both by reading the soil and watering the trough on its own timing.
How to tell when it needs water
Check the soil, not the surface. Push a finger or a probe three to four inches down. Dry at that depth means water. Damp at that depth means wait.
A handheld meter reads one spot at one moment. Take two or three readings around the trough, since the sunny wall dries before the shaded side. A meter and a fixed bed sensor answer different questions, which we cover in the meter versus bed sensor guide.
A probe or a meter reads one depth at one point. A trough can stay wet six inches down while the top three inches are dry, so a single low reading near the surface does not always mean the roots are thirsty. Read at root depth before you decide.

Before the next hot stretch, drill the drainage, mulch the surface, and take a baseline reading at root depth. - Do galvanized troughs make good planters?
- Yes, once you drill drainage into them. The deep soil gives roots room and the metal warms early in spring. The trade-off is that the steel walls dry the soil against them faster than a wooden or plastic bed, so you have to watch moisture more closely.
- How often should I water a metal trough planter?
- Water it by what the soil reads, not by a calendar. In a full-sun trough during a hot week the top few inches can dry in a day or two, while a cool spell stretches that out. Push a probe three to four inches down and water when it comes up dry at that depth.
- How do I keep a trough planter from drying out?
- Mulch the surface to slow evaporation and fill the trough with a soil that holds water rather than a fast-draining mix. Shading the sunny wall or grouping troughs together cuts the heat the metal takes on. Deeper soil also buys time, since the roots can reach damp soil below the baked top layer.
