Will your water spigot freeze tonight

A frost-proof spigot keeps water out of the exposed section of pipe, so nothing sits there to freeze and split the line. It protects the plumbing well. It cannot tell you which night your yard drops to freezing, and that is the piece the hardware leaves to you.

How a frost-proof spigot keeps the pipe dry

A frost-proof sillcock puts the shutoff valve inside the heated wall rather than at the spout. When you close the handle, the water stops indoors where the house is warm. The water still sitting in the long stem drains out through the spout by gravity, so the exposed brass holds nothing on a cold night. With no water in the exposed run, there is nothing to expand and crack the pipe when the temperature falls.

The whole design leans on that drain. The stem has to pitch downward toward the outside so the last of the water runs out. Mount it level or tilted back toward the house and water pools in the stem, which puts you back where an ordinary spigot starts.

Do freeze-proof spigots work, and where they fail

They work when installed and used correctly, and they fail in two predictable ways. The first is a hose left attached. A connected hose seals the spout and traps the water that should drain, so the trapped column freezes and splits the pipe behind the wall where you cannot see it. The second is a bad pitch, which leaves standing water for the same reason.

  • Disconnect hoses in fall. This single step prevents the most common frost-proof-spigot burst. Store the hose drained.
  • Check the pitch. The stem should tilt down toward the spout so it empties fully.
  • Know your valve depth. The seat must close inside heated space, past the cold zone near the outer wall face.

If you take one action tonight, pull the hose off the spigot. A hose left on turns a frost-proof spigot back into a pipe full of water waiting to freeze.

How deep a frost-proof spigot needs to reach

Depth is set by where the valve closes inside the wall. The valve seat has to sit inside the heated part of the wall, past the band near the outside face that goes cold. An insulated exterior wall stays warm close to the surface, so a shorter stem reaches heated space. An unheated garage or a thick masonry wall pushes the cold band deeper, so you need a longer stem to clear it. Match the stem length to the wall you are drilling through and pitch it down.

The night your yard freezes

Even a perfect spigot stays silent about the weather. Frost and a frozen line follow the air low, and the low your yard reaches is rarely the number in the forecast. Dense cold air sinks below the warmer air near it. On a still night that heavier air flows to the lowest ground you have and pools there. A yard in a hollow, or one that opens onto a cold slope, ends the night colder than the regional point the forecast reports.

Our own station has measured lows 7°F under the forecast. A forecast of 35°F becomes a 28°F night at the spigot, which is enough to freeze a pipe that still holds water. Our published first fall frost lands 10-22, but our learned lows push the real first frost to about 09-30, and we recorded a first fall frost on 2025-10-03. Reading the forecast alone would have left the spigot exposed weeks early.

The alert has one limit. It reports the air low for your site, and it does not know which run of pipe is most exposed, whether wind is stripping heat off the brass, or whether you left a hose attached. It tells you the night to act, and the draining is still your job.

Before the first cold snap, set your offset or check your area low, then walk the yard and pull every hose off. If you also run irrigation, line this up with winterizing the sprinkler system for the first freeze so the whole outdoor water supply drains on the same night.
