Winterize your sprinkler system before the first night your yard drops to a hard freeze. Water expands as it freezes, so any water left in a shallow line or in the above-ground backflow assembly can split the pipe. The published first-frost date for your region tells you roughly when to watch. Your own yard sets the deadline that counts.

Why the first hard freeze is the deadline

Freezing water pushes outward with enough force to crack brass and PVC. Your in-ground lines sit only a few inches down, and the backflow preventer usually stands above the soil where cold air reaches it directly. That exposed valve freezes first, often on a night the buried pipe would have survived.

A short dip to just under freezing rarely bursts anything. A hard freeze that holds for hours does, because the cold has time to reach the water inside the metal. So the night you care about is the first sustained hard freeze, and that arrives on its own schedule in every yard.

Your yard's date

On a still night, dense cold air slides downhill and settles in low ground. A sprinkler system in a valley or against a north wall can freeze days before one on a slope a block away. The regional frost date averages a wide area and misses this.

In our own garden the published first fall frost is October 22. After we learned how much colder our site runs, the effective date moved to September 30, and the first fall frost we recorded was October 3. Our station reads about 7°F below the forecast. That gap is the difference between winterizing on time and finding a cracked valve. Your frost dates are probably off in the same way.

Blow-out versus draining

How you clear the water depends on how your system was plumbed.

  • Gravity drain. If the system has manual or automatic drain valves at its low points, open them and let the water run out. Flat runs and low heads trap water that this method misses, so check every zone.
  • Blow-out. If water stays trapped, push compressed air through each zone one at a time until only mist comes out. Most in-ground systems need this.

The above-ground backflow preventer is the part that bursts first and costs the most to replace. Insulate it or drain it before the exposed cold night, even if you have not finished the buried lines.

Set a threshold for your yard now, before the forecast turns, so a cold night does not catch the lines full. When the adjusted low crosses it, run your blow-out or open your drains the same day.
