Garden Watering Systems: Which Type to Buy — and the One Thing None of Them Can Sense
Search "garden watering system" and you get product grids — soaker hoses, drip kits, tap timers — ranked by price, hose length, and how many zones the manifold splits. All useful at checkout. All silent on the one thing that actually decides whether your garden thrives: none of these systems can tell whether the bed it's about to water is already wet. They deliver water on a schedule. Sensing need is a different job.
The three systems people actually buy
Strip away the branding and almost every home setup is one of three things, and each trades convenience against control.
- Soaker hose: a porous hose that weeps along its length. Cheap, dead simple, great for a single long bed — but flow is uneven end-to-end and you can't easily meter one plant differently from another.

Pick the one that fits your beds and your water pressure. But notice what every vendor page assumes and never questions: a fixed schedule. Twenty minutes, three mornings a week, forever. That assumption is the problem.
Every one of them runs blind
A timer knows the time. It does not know that it rained 8 mm overnight, or that the bed by the fence dries twice as fast as the shaded one, or that the tomatoes are past their thirsty flowering push and the schedule you set in May is now drowning them in August. It opens the valve because the clock said so.
That's fine when your whole garden dries at the same rate and the weather never changes — which is to say, never. In reality some beds bake and some stay damp, and a single schedule overwaters half of them to keep the other half alive. The system is delivering water perfectly. It just has no signal telling it which bed needed it. That signal has to come from somewhere else.

Rain-skip is garden-level — hold after real rain
The other place a schedule wastes water is right after it rains. One honest caveat: a soil probe and a rain gauge narrow the guesswork, they don't repeal the weather. A probe reads one spot in one bed, not the whole garden, and a heat wave will outrun any schedule you set. What the reading buys you is fewer obvious mistakes — watering a bed that's still wet, or missing a dry corner until it wilts.
