Does a moisture meter for plants work
A moisture meter for plants works, within limits. It reads the water content near the tip of its probe. It reports one spot, at the moment you push it in. That number is real. It will stop you watering a pot that is already soaked. The rest of the bed stays out of view, and so does the reading from six hours ago.
What the meter measures
Most inexpensive meters read conductivity rather than true moisture. A small current passes between two prongs. Wet soil conducts it better than dry soil, so the needle rises as the ground gets wetter. The reading tracks moisture loosely. That is enough for a rough wet-or-dry call.
The same physics is its weakness. Dissolved fertilizer salts also carry current, so a fed bed can read wetter than it is. Loose, sandy soil holds the prongs poorly and can read low while roots have plenty. Treat the number as a rough direction. Read the same spot the same way each time, so the trend means something.
Where to test and how often
Push the probe into the root zone, a few inches down. Aim halfway between the stem and the edge. The surface dries first. A surface reading tells you little about what the roots feel. Take two or three readings across a bed, because one end can sit far wetter than the other under the same sky.
Check before you water. A bed's drying rate climbs with heat and plant size. The interval that worked in June is wrong in a hot week. A reading from two days ago tells you about two days ago. A spot-check captures a moment, and moisture moves. That is its core limit.
What one spot, one moment misses
In our own garden a raised bed with peppers and carrots swung from 32% on one July day to 62% in late August. A single reading in that range is accurate and nearly useless on its own. It doesn't tell you which way the number is heading. Over the same weeks a second raised bed held a tighter 36% to 57%. The open ground bed ran 32% to 62%. Three beds told three different stories. A handheld meter samples them one poke at a time.
